What is a skills matrix?
Skills matrix: A grid of people against the skills or competencies their work requires, showing the level each person has reached and where a team has gaps.
A skills matrix is a grid that lists people down one side and the skills or competencies their work requires across the top, with each cell showing the level a person has reached. Read along a row and you see one employee's strengths and gaps; read down a column and you see how much of a capability a team actually has, and whether it depends on one or two people.
Teams use a skills matrix to plan training, staff projects, cover absences and spot single points of failure before they cause problems. It is most useful when the levels mean the same thing to everyone, which is why a matrix works better built on a defined competency scale than on self-ratings of beginner, intermediate and expert.
The common failure is that the matrix lives in a spreadsheet updated once a year and drifts away from the assessments people actually receive. Competency management software solves that by producing the matrix from the assessments themselves. In CLEAR Talent each competency is mapped to the roles that require it and the target level for each, and organisation-wide dashboards show capability coverage and gaps by team, department and competency, with longitudinal charts showing progress over time. Gaps then flow into development plans, so the matrix drives action rather than just recording it.
